Ofw. Helmut Neureiter

Good morning: Back in May of this year Alex Crawford initiated a thread on a Bf110 crash in Norway,I believe either the 24th, or 26th.5.40, the A/C belonging to I/ZG76. At the time there seemed to be confusion, not only on the date, but also on whether or not, then Uffz. Neureiter, was a pilot, or a Bordfunker. Chris Goss I believe had info. suggesting he was bf to Oblt. Reinhold Eckhardt. Just to perhaps confuse things further, Chris Shores, in "Dust clouds in the Middle East" States that Ofw. Neureiter was one of twelve "pilots" from 4/ZG76 sent to Iraq with Sonderkommando Junck in May.1940. John Weal, in his Osprey work, suggests that Neureiter was a pilot, and wingman to Eckardt, when he forcelanded out of fuel "on a frozen lake high in central Norway". Unfortunately no date given. It was not unheard of for the bf position to be occupied on occasion by a second pilot (ie. Gentzen/Domeier). Can anyone comment further? Regards. Dean

Re: Ofw. Helmut Neureiter

I have a list of aircrew of I/ZG 76 produced by one of the groundcrew officers. It mentions a Fw Neureiter but just the one. Another document mentions Eckardt's Bf being a Uffz Neuseiter but this name is not on this list. Another list has Fw Neureiter's Bf being an Ogefr Kukarka but again the groundcrew list has no mention of him. The report from Seenotflugkdo 1 dated 27 May 40 says that they rescued the crew from a Bf 110 68 deg N 17' east at 1725 hrs on 26 May and that the Bf 11o's crew was Fw Neureiter & a funker. Finally, Ofw Helmut Neureiter of I/NJG 101 was injured in an accident 1 Feb 44-is it the same one? I would welcome confirmation one way or another!

Re: Ofw. Helmut Neureiter

Greeetings: Byron, As much as I appreciate your response, It seems to cast more doubt on Neureiter's status as a Pilot.. ,or crewmember?. Chris, I know that as a Historian you have done extensive research into this question, I thought I'd bring it up again to see if anything new had cropped up. Being as we are on the topic of I/ZG76, is there anything more on a pilot by the last name of "Ewers" who was known to have fought in Poland, but there after seems impossible to track. Looking mainly for first name, but anything at all would be helpful. Thank you. Dean

Re: Ofw. Helmut Neureiter

Hi Chris,

I think he was mentioned in one of the photos published in book "Lent`s papers" or something like that. Could be a mistake?

Robert

Re: Ofw. Helmut Neureiter

Gentlemen: The reference to Lt. Ewers comes from a photo on page 42 of Peter Hinchcliffe's " The Lent papers" The photo shows Hptm.Reinecke,Gr.Kdr of I/ZG76 decorating 4 pilots with the EKII. pilots in the Photo are identified as Oblt. Boehmel, Lt. Kettling,Lt. Graef, and Lt. Ewers. I wonder if Ulrich Kettling would recall anything on this individual? Regards. Dean.
