Lost Fairey Barracuda 1945
A very distant great aunt was Betty Keith-Jopp. She was an ATA ferry pilot in WWII and is mentioned in Giles Whittel's book, ' Spitfire Women of WWII'.
In late May/early June 1945, she and another ATA pilot took off from Prestwick en route to Lossiemouth in two Fairey Barracudas. Betty's aircraft ran into very low cloud and infamously belly flopped onto the sea and sank gently to the bottom of the Firth of Forth. She escaped and was picked up by a fishing boat. Is it possible to find out the following? Date of crash? Which mark of Barracuda? Registration letters and codes? Type of camouflage pattern/colours? If anyone can help, I would appreciate it very much. |
