Bf 109E and self sealing tanks

Hi,

Does anybody here have clues about what kind of fuel tank (sevaral types..?) was used on the Emils? I am looking through French, British and even Russian evaluation reports, and there is no hint in them wheter they are of the self sealing type, or just a plain light alloy tank.

No hint in the German manuals I have the for the plane either. However evaluations for the Bf 110C hint the fuel tanks on this other Messerschmitt fighter were self sealing by ca May 1940.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

Re: Bf 109E and self sealing tanks

According "Bf 109 Recognition manual" the production of self sealing, semi-rigid fuel tanks for Bf 109 started in 1942, and only some Friedrichs got them. Earlier tanks were made of light alloy covered with rubber layer, giving rather poor protection against leakage.
