Re: Do17Z 8/KG77 Lost 28.5.40
8./KG77 Dornier Do17Z. Reported shot down by AA fire near Lijssenthoek, 4km south of Poperinge, during photo-reconnaissance to Lille but possibly that attacked by S/L Cooke of No. 65 Squadron 10.00 a.m. FF Hptmn Helmut Dennewitz (Staffelkapitän) and BF Oberfw Albert Meinhardt both killed, BO Lt Josef Binder and BM Oberfw Hermann Kittner baled out and both captured unhurt. Aircraft 3Z+CS 100% write-off.
The captured airmen were taken to England where, highly security-conscious, they gave fictitious names for the rest of the crew to prevent RAF Intelligence discovering the loss of their Staffelkapitän |

Re: Do17Z 8/KG77 Lost 28.5.40
Peter,
Is this the replacement a/c for the one that I just posted a query about on the TOCH Board a couple of days ago? Were did we get the code for this one? "May 12, 1940: 8./KG77 Dornier Do17Z. Engaged by Hurricanes of No. 79 Squadron over Liege and badly damaged. Believed that pursued by P/O Parker which forced-landed damaged at Crapoel, south-west of Gulpen, Netherlands. FF Lt Konrad Hengsbach, BO Uffz Kurt Pankau, BF Obergefr Erich Hofmann, and HS Flgr Karl Sprenger all seriously wounded and admitted to hospital in Aachen. Aircraft 3Z+CS 60% damaged but repairable." Re: Do17Z 8/KG77 Lost 28.5.40
Larry,
Codes for loss on May 28, 1940, came from A.I.1.(k) Report No.132/1940. Source of codes quoted for May 12, 1940, loss not recorded (?). |
