Do17 crew ranks question
Hello chaps,
Starter for 10... In a Do17z, what positions did the following man? An Oberlt A Fw. A. Uffz and an Obergefr. Many thanks Austin |

There is no link between the rank and the position of a crew, AFAIK.
At the start of the war, the highest rank in a Luftwaffe crew was USUALLY the observer (BO in German documents), who was also the plane captain, with the pilot being under his command. Later the pilot of a German aircraft with several crew was usually the plane captain, and so probably had the highest rank. But these are no rules and can be used to say who was in which position for a given crew. Still as a general rule to start more research, a Gefr or an ObGfr in such a crew will in many cases be the air gunner. But again many cases could be found of the contrary. |
