Searching date of birth/death - Hptm Franz Steigleder

Hello all,

This is similar to an earlier post, but with a different twist. I'm researching the wartime career of Hptm (final rank) Franz Steigleder. I already know his unit movements (thanks to Larry de Zeng and others), and that he was still alive up to end 1944 early 1945.

But in order to initiate further searches, for example with BAMA Freiburg or WASt, I need to have his date of birth and his date of passing (if known). Does anyone have any idea / source where I can get this, with just rank/name and unit info?

Thanks in advance for your help.

P.S. - The only known NVM for an injury he suffered is near totally blackened with the DOB illegible.

If I were you, I think I would engage one of the fee-for-service researchers who live in the Freiburg area and have a close working relationship with the BA-MA archivists. They could then convince BA-MA that you are not a militaria collector or someone who wants to glorify a "Nazi", but rather a serious writer who hopes to publish an article or a book about an RAF/RAAF bomber shot down by Steigleder that will focus on the participants, especially the bomber air crew personnel. I think this would be your best shot to quickly obtain a full set of copies of Steigleder's records. The total cost to you for this might be in the 150 Euro range. I believe the BA-MA web site has a list of these fee-for-service researchers.

Well if he have'nt been dead for at least 30 years you will get absolutely nothing on him, this according to German law.

Andre -

Here is a link to an introduction and instructions for the obtaining of copies of officer records from BA-MA Freiburg. It was written by Dr. Gustavo Martin and is based on his personal experiences with BA-MA Freiburg between 2006 and 2008. I vouch for it 100% because this has been my experience, too. Be sure and read all four of the numbered parts, but particularly 1 and 2. Everything I told you in my first post is correct. Should you desire to contact one of the BA-MA archivists intimately familiar with the Luftwaffe officer records directly, send me a PM for their personal e-mail address and phone number. However, you will stand a much better chance if you go through a fee-for-service intermediary as I recommended in my first post.
