Ju-88H tail
Has there been any settlement of the question of whether the Ju-88H had the vertical tail surfaces of the early A-series or the enlarged G-series style? The best source I know on the H is the old Flugzeug magazine article from the 80s and it was not certain then. Has there been a consensus reached since?

Re: Ju-88H tail
Hi...
As far as I'm aware, the 'H' series - both reconnaissance and heavy fighter versions - used the earlier style tail. Most sources I've read state the fuselage was based on the 'D' sub-type, and presumably therefore, the vertical fin and rudder too. Unfortunately, I've never seen any photos that would confirm this beyond doubt. Perhaps someone else may have... ![]() Regards... Paul |

Re: Ju-88H tail
There is both a side view drawing and full photo of the "H" and although it is not in front of me right now my memory agrees with Paul, the vertical tail was as a late A-4/D-1.

Re: Ju-88H tail
From a quich search on some of my books and internet it seems the Ju-88H had the earlier shape fin (more pointed shape)
I will try to find more |

Re: Ju-88H tail
Hi
I found this photo of a Ju-88H at http://rareaircraf1.greyfalcon.us/GERMANY.htm ![]() Althought the tail section is not very clear seen it seems to indicate an earlier tail shape. As the Ju-88H-1 was produced from the D-1 fuselages it is more logical that the earlier tail shape was also used... |

Re: Ju-88H tail
Photos of the Ju-88H are very rare. There is one that just shows the nose poking out of a hanger, a small, blurry gun camera photo in Chris Goss's "Bloody Biscay" and this one above. That is all I know of.

Re: Ju-88H tail
Agreeing the Ju 88 H-1 did use A-4 / D-1 tail unit (and were conversions of D-1 W.Nr. 0880430xxx range fuselages - with Gondola deleted - and flush entry hatch* fitted), the wings however seem like taken from Ju 88 R-2 or G-1 series (BMW 801 engines). Note the hot-air outlet from wing anti-ice system and shape of smaller u/c doors are same as seen on the G-1 / 6 series. A quick search on HD did not produce one image.
*As a sidenote, I recently found part of one such flush hatch (off an D series fuselage) and it was NOT the same shape as the "normal" Ju 88 A-17 or Ju 88 G-6 had. |

Re: Ju-88H tail
Ed, if that is from the Ju 88 downed by collision over Iceland, it apparently was a early "one-off" conversion and thus may not reflect the hatch shape of the much later A-17s or G-6s. I owe you a reference on this conversion if I ever can dig it out.
