Unteroffizier Leonhard(t) (Leo) Ottmann KG54

Is there any way of establishing if this JU88 pilot flew over the UK during the "Battle of Britain"? I know he was with KG54 - probably 6/KG54. He was awarded a 2nd class Iron Cross in September 1940, and 1st class the following month. He also qualified for his gold bomber pilot badge early in 1941. (I have been given his award certificate) Like many others, I have a great interest in the "Battle of Britain", but have never really looked at it from the Luftwaffe side before.

Is there any way of finding out any further information about Ottmann? I am told that he survived the war and that his flying logbook (with I guess all the answers) is in an official collection somewhere in Germany, but I am not sure if this is correct. Unfortunately all my inquiries about him have more or less drawn a blank so far. I know that there is a history of KG54 - sadly my command of the German language is non-existent!

thanks for looking,
Allan

Hi Allan, interesting to hear about Ottmann, ive gone through my KG54 files but cant find anything regarding your man!
I would be most interested to hear about anything further you may have on this chap, or information regarding his subsequent career.

Best regs,
Steve.

Re: Unteroffizier Leonhard(t) (Leo) Ottmann KG54

Hello Steve,

All I know about him is as follows:
1st & 2nd class Iron Cross - Obergerfeiten Leonard Ottmann (Sept & October 1940 no unit given)
Bomber pilot badge in gold - Unteroffizier Leonardt Ottmann II/Kampfgeschwader Nr. 54.(July '41).

On the internet I saw the following, but not sure if it means his logbook survives: Ottmann, Leo. (89 – 7) 6./KG 54, Leistungsbuch mit Flugberichte 567 missions.
1. Flug 1 am 13.06.1939 – Flug 421 am 04.08.1944
2. Flug 1 am 29.08.1940 – Flug 135 am 27.03.1944

I wonder if he has a Personalamt Card at Aachen? However, if he does, I am not sure about how one gets a copy.
Please let me know if you discover anything more about him.

Best,
Allan

It would appear that his logbook listing operational flights exists in Walter Waiss' collection so maybe it would be useful contacting him. You will be lucky getting anything from Aachen since they clamped down on requests for such items
