Torpedo Bomber Tactics

Does anyone have info on the tactics adopted by the Germans for dropping torpedo's? Eg speed, height, preferred angle of attack, how aiming was determined, how distance from target was estimated etc.

Try:

THIELE, Harold. Luftwaffe Aerial Torpedo Aircraft and Operations in World War II. U.K.: Hikoki Publications, Ltd., 2004. ISBN 1 902109 42 2.

This 96-page, heavily illustrated softcover book should answer most of your questions. The author did not include a "Tactics" appendix so you will have to go through the entire book and pick out the information you need piecemeal.

Re: Torpedo Bomber Tactics

I have Thiele's book and it is an excellent read. However it doesn't address torpedo tactics, training and techniques. It's more about missions flown, results, losses, aircraft used and many superb photographs and profiles.

A great book, but misses out on the nitty-gritty. Which seems to be common on any books that attempt to address this issue.

I seem to remember mentioning tactics in one of my Sea Eagles book based on an intelligence report

Re: Torpedo Bomber Tactics

I'm pretty sure I've seen some RAF analysis, either in the Air Ministry Weekly Intelligence Summaries or in ADI(K) prisoner interrogation reports. Searching for "German torpedo" on the National Archives website might point you to something.

Re: Torpedo Bomber Tactics

There are torpedo tactic paragraphs in ADIK reports 219/1942, 376/1942, 382/1942, Operational Training and Torpedo Training in IV/KG26 covered in 401A/1943 (not much on specific torpedo dropping though), Night Torpedo Tactics are covered in 302/1944.
These appear more as general notes rather than specific torpedo dropping procedures.
