Which Unit near Wetzlar, Germany

Bonjour,
I need some help concerning Wetzlar, in Hesse, Germany
Does anybody know the name of a fighter school (Jagdfliegerschule or Erg. Gruppe) based at (or near) Wetzlar at the end of 1944?
Merci
Fredo

Re: Which Unit near Wetzlar, Germany

Hello,

Wetzlar in Hessen did not have any airfield. In a small village nearby there was a field for starting gliders.

In the next town near wetzlar, called giessen, was a huge airfield. On this airfield Technical School 1 was based there. And also a "Frontfliegerschleuse", often used by FLÜG 1 and other units. Nearby some smaller Airfields used since Oktober by the JG 2.

Why you asked this question? I´m interessting at any kind of Luftwaffen cases in the giessen and wetzlar area because I´m living nearby.

Kind Regards
Mirko

Re: Which Unit near Wetzlar, Germany

Hello Mirko,

Thanks for your answer !
I am trying to find out what happened to an experienced pilot Ofw. Otto Müller. In Sommer 1944, he wrote in a letter that he had been just transferred to an Erg. Gruppe near Wetzlar as a Lehrer. End of February 1945, a friend of him wrote that this Müller had been KIA with his unit after its transfer to the East Front.
I would like to find in which unit Ofw. Otto Müller was killed, and when.

Does anybody have an idea: which trainig unit, probably an advanced training was transferred from Wetzlar to the front (east)? in Automn 1944 or early 1945?

Thanks in advance.

Fredo

Re: Which Unit near Wetzlar, Germany

Fredo,

Ries and Dierich in "Fliegerhorste und Einsatzhäfen der Luftwaffe" have the following:-

Gießen/Hess., 5 km NO Stadt; 1927 Notlandcplatz, 1928 Verkehrslandeplatz, 1932 Flughafen II. Ordnung; Grasnarbe. befestigtes Hallenvorfeld; seit 1937 Leit*horst: Deckname: Hundehütte«, Allcode: Y84.
(50 35 40N – 08 43 30 O)

Wetzlar/Hess., 400m NO des Bahnhofs; 1927 Notlandeplatz, bis 1945 genutzt. (50 33 40 N — 08 27 50 O)

I hope that this helps.
