RAF bombed Geneva June 1940

Hi guys

On 12 June 1940, the RAF accidently dropped bombs on Daillens, Rennens and Geneva (Switzerland), during which five Swiss citizens were killed and 50 injured.

Which unit was involved? Further details required, please.

Cheers
Brian

Re: RAF bombed Geneva June 1940

Thanks Alan

I have since discovered that 36 Whitleys from 10, 51, 58, 77 and 102 Squadrons were involved. Due to bad weather etc only 13 reached the target area and, as you mention, one of 77 Squadron crashed in France during the return flight.

Cheers
Brian

Re: RAF bombed Geneva June 1940

Brian,

A Swiss article (in French) of a Geneva aviation society a possible mentions a possible candidate for the erroneous bombing: 51 Squadron.

Check http://www.pionnair-ge.com/spip1/spip.php?article31

It says one Whitley apparently was off course (F/O Bisset?).

Regards,

Leendert
