Ju 88 A-4 plate: more info?

Hi from Sicily!

Some years ago I found this plate in a field in Southern Sicily.
Is it possible to have more info about this Junkers JU 88 A-4?
Any info is welcome!

Fabry

By itself, the information on this plate is insufficient to draw any pertinent history about a specific airplane or incident. What else can you say about the circumstances of its discovery, survival?

Spephen,

sorry for the delay: it's a bad week.

The provenance of the plate is a mistery. I found it in the field in front of my grandparents' house. However I'm sure there has never crashed a plane during the war, my grandparents would tell me if it appened.
The area of discovery is south of Ragusa, southern Sicily. *

In what part of the plane was the plate located?

Re: Ju 88 A-4 plate: more info?

Hi Fabry,

City (or town) of Ragusa, Sicily, is about 12 km east-south-east of Comiso, right? (So say Google-maps). There were used great many Ju 88 A-4´s in Southern Italy & Sicily during the war. These were used for attacks on Malta and Allied forces in Nort-Africa or ships in the Mediterranean. Probably you know all this. But units KGr 806, KG 1, KG 30, KG 54, KG 77 lost many in crashes at or near Comiso. I stopped counting when exceeding 30 incidents(accidents).

But looking for word "Ragusa" brought this up:

W.Nr. 140416 Ju 88 A-4 III/KG 54 (Ob.Befh.Sud)
OPS (F) engine damage and crash (100%) near Ragusa 03.01.1943 (F Uffz. Kurt Gram, B Obgefr. Josef Schmitz, BF Obgefr. Johann Herbst and BM Obgefr. Fritz Schneider killed)

So at least one crashed near there! But I am sorry, I do not have lists of all things, equipment or containers carried aboard the A-4. Thats for the "super-experts" to tell, but someone might have list of "Werkstoff"s ...

Best regards
ed

This dataplate comes from the exhaust or flame damper of the Jumo 211. Klatte made these things. The material 1010.2 is a sheet steel (DIN St VIII 23) which was also used in the Jumo 004.

Peter
