Sutherland's F4F's shot down Type 1 land attack bombers (G4M1) of the Misawa Air Group on 5 Oct 42. Pilots were Petty Officers Fukushige and Yamade.

First, to clarify my previous post Fukushige was shot down by another Hornet F4F flight. Yamada was the victim of Sutherland's flight. Sutherland's wingman was Lt (j.g.) Henry Carey. His number 3 and 4 men were Lts (j.g.) David Freeman and A. Dietrich. Sutherland made the first sighting. Carey may have made the decisive hits but all participated. RLD |
