S.G.1

Hi ive recently picked up a pilots grouping, photo album, award docs etc
for a pilot who served in 1/s.g.1 from late 43 until defeat in 45.

Looked up for some info on this unit and they appear to be if not the main Luftwaffe unit, one of who fought the Battle of Berlin. What i also read was that they surrended at their own will without been overrun etc.

So im asking for any more info about this Unit.

Many thanks
Andy

Re: S.G.1

Hello!

Your piece of collection sounds very interesting.

Few years back when I was searching something else at the Bundesarchiv homesite I noticed this document about I/SG1:

RL 21/249 Fliegerhorstkommandantur Wilna (E 267/III)
Anlagen zu den Kriegstagebüchern Nr. 4 und 5
including:
"Erfolgsmeldungen der I./SG 1"

I tried direct link to search results at ARGOS ( http://startext.net-build.de:8080/ba...RCH/search.htm ) but it didn't work.
I do remember there was longer description when I last looked into this. IIRC the SG1 report was from Spring 1944. But I may be in error. Anyway the period of the document should fit to your material.

There was also an interesting article about the second Gruppe in Luftwaffe im Focus Special:

Luftwaffe im Focus Special No. 1 - Colour
II./SG 1 in Finland, Spring 1944
http://www.luftfahrtverlag-start.de/...wfspecial.html

I don't know if there was any connection between the I/SG1 and II/SG1 during this time.

If your material includes any mentions about fighting in or above Estonia during Spring-Summer-Autumn 1944 I would like to hear more. It seems that I/SG 1 spent it's time in the Baltic countries Latvia and Lithuania, though.

And if you are not familiar with it, Michael Holm's superb Luftwaffe data site (http://www.ww2.dk) has also information about SG 1:
http://www.ww2.dk/air/attack/sg1.htm

Cheers,
Kari

Re: S.G.1

I should also suggest looking at Volume 2 of Dive-Bombers and Ground-Attack Units of the Luftwaffe" which has a 10 page mini-history of SG 1. This book should be released by Ian Allan this month.

Hello!

No wonder there.

When actually reading what I linked it seems that the first Gruppe /SG 1 spent it's time separately from the rest of the Geschwader and indeed has been based in Baltics only for few days. That was Kowno (Kaunas, Lithuania) 11.-15.7.1944.

The second Gruppe - II/SG 1 - is the one I would like to find more data as it flew from Estonian bases mid-February to late April, 1944.

Re: S.G.1

The release of Volume 2 of Dive-Bomber and Ground Attack Units of the Luftwaffe" was unfortunately delayed while the publisher deals with the effects of the recession. We were assured recently that the publisher still expects to release this volume in March 2011, which is to say, a year late. This volume deals with all of the "SG" type units as well as the Schl.G. and SKG type units. It also contains all the indices, appendices and the bibliography.

Have patience!
