Re: serial 260 Sqn Kittyhawk (Sgt. Carlisle) 15.6.42?
Hi Bas,
Thanks for the reply; one of my secondary sources for 15.6.42 informed me that the loss concerned a 260 Sqn Kittyhawk piloted by a Sgt. Carlise. Let me re-phrase the question then: I have the following German claim for 15.6.42; which Allied loss could be matched to the claim: Ofw. Hermann Sommer: 13 2./NJG2 P-40 over Mediterranean Sea 19.00 Cheers, Theo |

Re: serial 260 Sqn Kittyhawk (Sgt. Carlisle) 15.6.42?
Hallo,
Sgt Carlisle was shot down on 16. june over El Adem on 16,30 by Bf109. Possibly british sqn encountered by Sommer was the 250 Sqn, active around 19,50 over a convoy in the Med against a formation of italian SM79 (130km N of Gambut), but no losses. Data from the excellent A history of Mediterran air war vol II regards |

Hello Alessandro,
Cheers and thanks for putting the right date on the loss of Sgt. Carlisle -is there any mention of a 250 Squadron aircraft damaged in the encounter with Sommer on 15th June 1942? Cheers, Theo |

![]() Theo,
If it helps: I have always known that one to be a twin-engined aircraft of unspecified type... Nick Hawaiian Tee-Shirt wearing blonde-dreadlocked surfer guy fresh out of the institution |

Hi Nick,
.. well, Sommer's Leistungsbuch says a different thing for this claim, it states "Einmotoriges Flugzeug (USA)".. Cheers, Theo |

Re: serial 260 Sqn Kittyhawk (Sgt. Carlisle) 15.6.42?
That certainly corrects the record then. I wonder how things got so confused in the first place.
Can anyone shed a light on any other possible losses or encounters that might have resulted in this claim? Maybe one possible insight is the fact that Wilhelm Crinius of JG 53 at one point claimed a 'USA Fighter' that turned out to be a Hurricane, the vokes filter obviously appearing to be the big chin-radiator of a Curtiss P-40.... |

Theo
250 Sqn were flying "long Range" Kittyhawks and were the only single seat unit that could get that far out. They were there late in the day but did not lose anyone. See Mediterranean Air War Vol 2. Regards Russell |

Thanks for the feedback Russell; it appears that the Sommer claim remains a bit of a mystery ..
Cheers, Theo |
