Nice photos. I have several I./3./KG 51 He 111s reported lost from Sep-39 through May-40, though none seem to really fit the bill - this machine seems relatively intact (<10% damaged). As such, it may not have been reported in losses at all.

I would agree with Jim's comment that damage was much less than 10% so wouldn't feature in usual loss/damage report. Tip-up was obviously low speed so crew may not have been badly injured, if at all. The unit daily diary/report or maintenance logs would usually have details, if they could be located!

Regards,

David

Hi Dave, the daily/report maint. logs you speak of are interesting, ive never come across any examples of these before. Would you happen to have an example or know of a source of these reports, i would very much like to see what information may be recorded on these documents.

Best regs,
Steve.

Re: Upturned He 111 9K + JL

Hi Steve,

There are definitely some around - somewhere! I have had part copies in the past, unfortunately lost with a load of other documents, books etc, that were 'borrowed'.

The diary I had listed all aircraft activity on a daily basis for a particular unit, loads of mundane stuff but also listing aircraft mishaps with brief damage details, many WNrs and codes, aircraft sent away (presumably for repair), and new aircraft coming onto the books. It also had some personnel movements, from memory. Pages were A3, with screw down covers. I definitely got the impression that it was more a standard type item than locally produced.

I also had several pages of maintenance/repair logs from one of the French based repair workshops with all sorts of detail, and a few individual aircraft load/ CofG cards. I think that the pilot got these prior to take-off for balance/trim purposes. I'm sure that I still have one of these somewhere that I'll have to dig out.

If someone could suggest what the actual names were for these items it might help in searching for others (I know that I won't be getting mine back, unfortunately).

Regards,

David

Hi David, thank you for explaining the detail of the unit daily report logs and maintenance cards, im gutted to hear about your loss also, what a kick in the teeth when helping someone!
If you manage to unearth anything like this i would be really interested to see these items, if possible.

If anybody has similar report logs or maintenance cards i would be interested to hear from them.

Kindest regs,
Steve.
