Spitfire QV-F from 19 Sqn

Recently there were several good photographs on e-bay showing a crashed Spitfire I or II (QV-F) from the 19 Squadron. I guess this aircraft was shot down after November 1940 because she has the Sky band on the rear fuselage. I think the photograph was taken during Spring or Summer 1941 when seeing the light uniforms of the Germans and the greens of the plants and trees. Somebody can tell me when this aircraft crashed and who was the pilot ? Unfortunately the serial isn't readable because it is partially overpainted.

Re: Spitfire QV-F from 19 Sqn

Good evening Montana,

One of these photographs taken from the left side of the aircraft shows the begining of the serial number as P92 or P93.
P92.. aircraft were Wellingtons.
P93.. Were Spitfires MkI.
No.19 Squadron lost P9305 shot down by Bf109s near Dunkirk on the 26th of may 1940 ( Source:James J Halley ) and this is the only P93.... Spitfire mentioned having been allocated to this Squadron.

Best regards.

Bernard.

Trouble is P9305 was piloted by Sgt Charles Albert Irwin #564214 who is commerated on the Runnymeade Memorial so looks like he was lost in Channel... And that picture looks like the pilot got out ok...

Re: Spitfire QV-F from 19 Sqn

Hi
having a second look at the photo suggests it could be an P8....
Sky bands came in late Nov '40, yellow leading edge aug '41
so photos can't be before aug '41,

maybe P8243, or P8255.

cheers
jerry

Many thanks to all ! P8243 and P8255 seemed to apply to this crash but unfortunately these two Spit were lost above the sea off the Dutch coast and the pilots were killed. For me this Spit is a real mystery ! The pilot apparently was taken POW or evaded. When you look at a photograph, a German is taking his parachute from the cockpit. The canopy is smashed too.

Hi
true, but it has happened before,
for example P7095 crash landed, there are some very good pictures of an almost intact aircraft, but it's pilot sgt brown was later found to have been killed.
strange things happen in wartime.
cheers
Jerry
