He III claimed 11 May by Blenheim.
On May 11 there is a brief encounter with a He III near Texel
(having taken off at 04.30 and landed at 08.30 at Bircham Newton) whilst doing convoy protection. The copy reads "He III burst into flames and crashes." I've checked Peter Cornwalls book but am unable to find a confirmation, might anyone help? Kind Regards Andrew Bird |

Re: He III claimed 11 May by Blenheim.
Hi Andy,
Indeed a mystery, no He111 crashed at that time around Texel. A possible match I can make, though, is this one (from Peter's book): AufklStaffel Fl.K.zbV. Luftflotte 2 Heinkel He111H-2. Shot down by flak during reconnaissance sortie over Oostvoorne and crashed on the beach at Renesse, north of Haamstede 6.30 a.m. Uffz E. Steussloff, Uffz R. Wunderlich (FF), and Uffz H. von Hoff killed. Obergefr S. Klug baled out and captured unhurt. Aircraft a write-off. The timing fits exactly, halfway 4.30 and 8.30 a.m. The location is 200 km more to the south, of course, over the Schelde estuary instead of the Wadden Isles. Still, I don't have the full flight report, but possibly they chased the He111 down the coast, or only encountered it on the way back. Can you give some more details on the flight; squadron (I suppose 235), crew, serial or code? Thanks. Pieter |
