218 Squadron Association

Gentlemen,

A bit of a cheek in all honesty. Currently working on a squadron history of No.218 (Gold Coast) Squadron. Interested in any details / photographs or anecdotes on this squadron. Pen & Sword will hopefully publish the book, titled “In Time, 218 at War” in 2009.

Thank you in advance.

Re: 218 Squadron Association

Hi - don't have much, but do have a photo of my father and his crew, who flew with 218. They're in typical pose grouped around a cookie and in front of their Lanc. Sadly one of the crew later died when they lost the plane in a raid over Neuss in January 45.

I think you already have details of the rather dramatic circumstances of its lost, in which one of the crew won a CGM.

I have also sent you a separate email seeing if you can help me with codes for the crews normal Lanc - I have commissioned a painting of a daylight raid on St Vith, and could do with some info

Re: 218 Squadron Association

Hi Steve,

I'm interested in Lancaster NF 911 (coded HA-F) which was lost on the night of 12/13th September 1944.

The Australian War Memorial site has a record of NF 911 colliding with Lancaster ME 854 of 576 Squadron. Sadly all members of both crews were killed and are buried in Rheinberg Cemetery. Do you have any way of verifying this from your records ?

Regards

Nick
