History/Info on He59 D-A+NYI Poss WNr1638

Hello,

I'm processing 21 photos from the ECPA-D Collection into the EOE DB. They show from start to finish either a real or training rescue mission of an airman down in the sea. The a/c involved is He59 D-A+NYI. A website lists this as W.Nr. 1628. Can anyone confirm this SN, provide the subtype, and give me any info about the history of this a/c, or the incident illustrated in the ECPA-D photo series? This photo sequence was taken when the a/c is still in the pre-August, 1940 red cross markings and paint scheme (white).

I have similar photos of white/red cross marked He59s in the DB with the codes D-A+DIU, D-A+QUV and D-A+LYO for which I'd appreciate similar info. Images of the latter are also from the ECPA-D Collection. Also, am I correct in thinking that after about the end of July, 1940, SNFKdo He59s no longer carried the white paint scheme with the red crosses?

Thanx,

Wasn't there an issue of Signal (unless that is what you mean by ECPA-D) that had a multi-page spread showing a pre-August rescue sequence?

I will look through my stuff to see if I have a copy of it to check.

EDIT: there was an article in Der Adler but the aircraft involved was D-ARYX.

Re: History/Info on He59 D-A+NYI Poss WNr1638

Adam,

I'm aware of this "Signal" article, which was in the issue of Sept. 3, 1940, P.431. There should be four photos of D-A+RYX illustrating that article. I have photocopies, but not scans suitable for the EOE DB. If you have that issue of "Signal," would it be possible for you to send me scans of the photos and the article itself, that I can then get translated. As a part of the EOE Project we're in the process of acquiring and translating all the known KTBs for the SNFKdo units from 1939-40 that survived the war, which are adding some useful information to our comprehensive Luftwaffe loss/damages/casualty DB. If anyone has higher quality images of the photos of D-A+RYX used to illustrate that article, I'd appreciate hearing about it. These are not in the ECPA-D collection, but they could be in the BA Luftwaffe Collection. We will need to do color profiles for about seven different SNFlKdo He59s for the book series, covering Sept., 1939 to the end of Dec., 1940.

ECPA-D is the French Dept. of Defense Archive in Paris.

Regards,
