The book is about a fictional mission by the Luftwaffe to assassinate FDR. The protagonist is Lieutenant Colonel Siegfried von Rall, the "best pilot in the Luftwaffe" and Goering's technical advisor. Rall conceives a plan to use an experimental inter-continental bomber and first generation "smart bombs" to blow up the White House and kill the President. The story follows the formation of a SONDERKOMMANDO and preparations to carry out the strike. A sub-plot involves Allied code-breakers at Bletchly Park in England reading signals pertaining to the SONDERKOMMANDO and attempting ti interpret their meaning. The book climaxes with the actual inter-contental flight and last-minute Allied efforts to thwart the planned outcome.
