Fate of captured B-17?

Hi guys

It seems that KG200 had the use of at least three captured B-17s for its operations over North Africa and elsewhere in the Mediterranean area in 1944.

One of these was possibly lost on 25 May 1944. In the Thomas/Ketley book ('KG 200: The Luftwaffe's Most Secret Unit') it is suggested that the aircraft ditched offshore in the Bay of Kalamata, Greece, from which the crew was rescued; other sources including 'The Lost Oasis' states that the machine carried out an emergency landing at Kalamaki airfield, Greece, and that it was repaired and returned to service.

Can anyone throw any light on this incident, and also identify the aircraft concerned, please?

Cheers
Brian

Re: Fate of captured B-17?

Kommando Süd's B-17 did end up in shallow water, IIRC, but I don't know if it was recovered.

The late Geoff Thomas spent a lot of time on tracking KG 200's B-17s before the Hikoki KG 200 book ever appeared, so I'd consider it a trustworthy source.

Re: Fate of captured B-17?

Thanks Nick

That's what I thought, but several other sources differ. Probably all copying the other!

Cheers
