Bf 109G-14 at Salzburg-Maglan A/F
Hallo gentlemen,
would somebody of you be so kind and provide me with the correct markings of the Bf 109G with damaged undercarriage lying in front of Ju 290 9V+EK WNr 290110162 on the autobahn strip besides Salzburg-Maxglan airfield? Krzystof Wolwski classifies it as Bf 109G-14/AS "Black 3" WNr 786156 which can't be correct. On better scans I recognize a "Black 63" with tailfin numbers "3(?)3156" as first figures which would make it a K-series. Might this Bf 109 have something to do with the plethora of high-number Messerschmitts photographed at Mühldorf a/f(WotBC 7, p.2,3)? Final replacements for JG 300? TIA Regards Roland |

Re: Bf 109G-14 at Salzburg-Maglan A/F
Hi Roland,
Many years ago, Thomas H. Hitchcock and I had a long correspondence over this 109. I too initially thought I saw “X33156” on its fin. However, after much discussion, Tom convinced me that it was actually Erla-built G-14, WNr. 463156. In this photo, the heavy overspray on its fin cap does a good job of disguising its true Werknummer. Additional views of this aircraft confirm its correct identity as an Erla-built G-14: “G” cowl bumps; tall wooden tail unit; short tail wheel leg; under wing Morane mast; and a missing Erla Haube. Finally, unlike many G-14s from the 463XXX and 464XXX series, it features the smaller oil tank and corresponding lower oil filler hatch. Steve Sheflin |

Revi and Steve,
You did a great work there: I've followed Wolowski's mistaken interpretation so far; your demonstration - and much clearer shots - once again makes the difference! And thanks, Roland for having asked the question in the first place;-)) Many many thanks Marc |

Re: Bf 109G-14 at Salzburg-Maglan A/F
Thanks a lot, Steve and Revi, for your detailled explanation!
Now that we know about "Black 63" in Salzburg-Maxglan, here´s the 2nd part of my question: The letters, though very close to the DIN 1451 "Norm"-stencilling, are identical to the Mühldorf photographs mentioned above, especially "Black 35" and "Black 37". EJG 1 with Stab and IV./EJG 1 were stationed at Mühldorf-Mettenheim from February '45 to 17th April '45; whereas 14./EJG 1 was based at Bad Aibling a/f. Mettenheim lies 75km apart from Maxglan, Bad Aibling 76 km. Mettenheim suffered from an US air raid on 26th April '45 with "150 planes destroyed" On the photos of WotBC 7 it seems the affected planes were being sorted out for recycling by Luftwaffe personnel, "Flossenbürg" and "Pocking" being chalked on the fuselages. Maybe this is some kind of classification, because Mtt Flossenbürg had a "Zerlegebetrieb" and Fliegerhorst Pocking featured repair facilities. JG 300 was based at Salzburg-Maxglan and Ainring with Stab and 4 Gruppen. (Data are from ww2.dk, Fliegerhorst Mühldorf homepage and own data) It looks like "Black 63" was among the undestroyed inventory of EJG 1, either from Stab, 15. and 16/EJG 1 in Mühldorf-Mettenheim or 14./EJG 1 in Bad Aibling. Whether it was to be thought as replacement plane for JG 300 or some plane to flee with, will be unknown, I´m afraid. Regards Roland Last edited by RolandF; 8th June 2012 at 16:07. |

Roland,
Thanks for your thorough comment; I've found one of the Mühldorf - Mettenheim pictures in the Hyper Scale review of WOTBC 7: http://www.flickr.com/photos/2809206...in/photostream Any possibility to upload the others, if Jerry agrees? Cheers Marc |

Here are two other pics of the Mühldorf - Mettenheim dump in July 1945, found at aeroscale.co.uk.
I've uploaded them here with the informations published by Jerry: http://www.flickr.com/photos/2809206...in/photostream http://www.flickr.com/photos/2809206...in/photostream Cheers Marc |

Folks,
I just found a new picture of the Salzburg - Maxglan planes. http://www.flickr.com/photos/2809206...in/photostream It does not give away more details on any particular machines, but it is taken from a new viewpoint which convey us a better feel for the global surrounding. Cheers Marc |
