Re: Bf109E loss at Owles Castle??
15 October 1940: 4./JG51 Messerschmitt Bf109E-1 (3535). Engine set alight under attack by fighter near Tunbridge Wells during free-lance sortie and abandoned over Owls Castle Farm at Lamberhurst 8.35 a.m. FF Uffz Erich Höhn baled out and captured unhurt. Aircraft White 2 + 100% write-off.
Excavated by the Wealden Aviation Archaeological Group in 1974 and fragments of the shattered airframe recovered. Re-excavated by the same group in 1979 when remains of Daimler-Benz DB 601 engine were unearthed together with various pieces of airframe bearing number ‘3535’ and propeller boss. Propeller boss and elevator mass balance weight now in the Tangmere Military Aviation Museum. |
