Can anyone please decipher the writing on the back of a photo I bought of a pilot flying a JU-88.

Ltn. Zirpel vom Feindflug am 29.12.42 nach Flugplatz Arco Philäenorum (Afrika) nicht zurückgekehrt.

Ltn Zirpel didn't return 29.12.42 from an operational (bombing) flight to airfield Arco Philäenorum (Afrika).

(5./KG 100, He 111H-14, 6N+AN, Flakbeschuß. Bruch 100 %.)

Literal translation (I believe): Ltn Zirpel from enemy flight on 29.12 42 to airfield Arco (?) Philäenorum did not return

More usual: Ltn Zirpel, who did not return from a sortie against the airfield Arco(?) Philäenorum on 29.12 1942

just to add the single line on top:

"Stupps" am Knüppel!

"Stupps" at the stick!

Stupps is a nickname i presume and stick is slang for controls.

Not an sortie against the airfield Arco Philaenorum ... he didn't return to the airfield ...

Arco Philaenorum (ital Arco dei Fileni) otherwise known as Marble Arch
The monument demolished by Ghaddafi in the 70s.
