Seeking Photo/Info for full code on 5(F)/122 Do17P SD 23.11.39 at Bras-sur Meuse, N of Verdun, France
Hello,
Regarding this incident: "23 November 1939: 5.(F)/122 Dornier Do17P-1. Shot down by S/Lt Robert Martin and Sgt-Chef Pierre Le Gloan of GC III/6 during reconnaissance of airfields between Avesnes and Montcornet and crashed at Bras-sur-Meuse, north of Verdun. (BeO) Lt Kurt Behnke, (FF) Uffz Hans Schrutek, and (BF) Uffz Arthur Herrmann believed baled out and captured unhurt. Aircraft 100% write-off." I've acquired several inages of this force-landed Do17P, including a segment of French newsreel film. However, I still don't know the full fuselage code, which should be F6+_N. Does anyone have any information that would provide the missing code letter, or photos that show the coding on the side of the fuselage of this aircraft? It was well photographed, so these must be out there somewhere. I need this for a Color Profile research package for the EoE Project. Thanx for your help. full code on 5(F)/122 Do17P SD 23.11.39 at Bras-sur Meuse, N of Verdun, France
Attachment 9314
Hallo, Posting a photo is very tricky.. I hope you will see the three photos attached. On the second photo from the top, you can see the right side of this Dornier. Left of the cross a black "6" is painted. Nothing is painted right of the cross (ii looks like the shape of two numbers or two letters are roughtly covered with paint. On the third photo, you can see the to french pilotes (Le Gloan left and Martin right). Between them the insignia is partialy cut out (an eagle on a shield). Rémi,
Thanx for your three photos. They did post and I was able to download them. I already had the bottom one showing Le Gloan and Martin, but the other two were new to me. These were not what I expected. The only other 5.(F)/122 photo I have is of a FL Do17P from the WC/FC period with the code F6+NN. The first "N" is clearly in red with a white outline. It doesn't look like they were using this system on the FL 23.11.39 Do17P. If they were using it at that time, this may have been painted out as you say, or even not yet applied. What I think I see is a red "C" or maybe "G" but without any outline. I can't tell for sure. I'm going to send you a PM with my personal email address so that we can discuss these photos. Please contact me at that address. Your effort to post these is much appreciated. Clearly this a/c was well photographed. Does anyone else perhaps have a photo showing the port side code, or even a view of the top of the wing with the individual a/c code visible? Regards, Larry Hickey EoE Project Coordinator |
