ID Bf110 crew lost 25 October 1941
Hi guys
I'm endeavouring to discover the identities of the Bf110 crew lost on 25 October 1941 in Russia's Far North theatre, near Murmansk. Any ideas, please? Cheers Brian |

Re: ID Bf110 crew lost 25 October 1941
Per the Gen.Qu. loss reports there were no losses near Murmansk for this date. Doesn't mean that such a loss didn't occur, but there doesn't appear to be any documentation - at least not from the usual sources.

Re: ID Bf110 crew lost 25 October 1941
Thanks Jim
According to Soviet sources, ace pilot Sorokin rammed a Bf110, which force-landed as he did, then shot the crew before trekking back to safety; he eventually had his feet amputated due to frostbite. I wonder if the date is incorrect? Cheers Brian |

Re: ID Bf110 crew lost 25 October 1941
Well Brian
If the book Stalin's Eagles is correct, you have to find three Bf 110, since Sorokin claimed to have shot down two and rammed a third so it crashed. The book does not say it was specifically the rammed aircraft's crew which attacked him, but just states it was one of the downed aircraft's crew. And yes, the date is also said to be Oct 25th, 1941 B Rgds Stig |

Re: ID Bf110 crew lost 25 October 1941
According to Mikhail Bykov's "The Soviet aces 1941-1945" none of those claims were officially credited to Sorokin. He made five claims before October 1941 (the last one on 15 September, Bf 109 over Zapadnaya Litsa). The next claim was made only in March 1943.

Re: ID Bf110 crew lost 25 October 1941
Well Maxim
How are we then to interpret that? Sorokin wasn't believed by his own authorities? If they are not official, why was the story promoted at least in the West that it still continues to make its rounds even here and now? Perhaps there was a good reason for not believing them, since no one can find three losses, and as it turns out not even one.... B Rgds Stig |

Re: ID Bf110 crew lost 25 October 1941
Hi guys
Well, can we confirm that Sorokin crash-landed on 25 October as a result of air action - otherwise why did he trek for several days, necessitating the amputation of his frost-bitten feet? Cheers Brian |

It seems that the whole story has no document evidences. Sorokin indeed crash-landed on 25 October 1941 but the exact cause of his loss is unclear. This source states that his MiG-3 suffered an engine malfunction: http://www.allaces.ru/p/people.php?id=7193 |
