ID Bf110 crew lost 25 October 1941

Hi guys

I'm endeavouring to discover the identities of the Bf110 crew lost on 25 October 1941 in Russia's Far North theatre, near Murmansk.

Any ideas, please?

Cheers
Brian

Re: ID Bf110 crew lost 25 October 1941

Per the Gen.Qu. loss reports there were no losses near Murmansk for this date. Doesn't mean that such a loss didn't occur, but there doesn't appear to be any documentation - at least not from the usual sources.

Re: ID Bf110 crew lost 25 October 1941

Thanks Jim

According to Soviet sources, ace pilot Sorokin rammed a Bf110, which force-landed as he did, then shot the crew before trekking back to safety; he eventually had his feet amputated due to frostbite.

I wonder if the date is incorrect?

Cheers
Brian

Well Brian

If the book Stalin's Eagles is correct, you have to find three Bf 110, since Sorokin claimed to have shot down two and rammed a third so it crashed.
The book does not say it was specifically the rammed aircraft's crew which attacked him, but just states it was one of the downed aircraft's crew.

And yes, the date is also said to be Oct 25th, 1941

According to Mikhail Bykov's "The Soviet aces 1941-1945" none of those claims were officially credited to Sorokin. He made five claims before October 1941 (the last one on 15 September, Bf 109 over Zapadnaya Litsa). The next claim was made only in March 1943.

Well Maxim

How are we then to interpret that?
Sorokin wasn't believed by his own authorities? If they are not official, why was the story promoted at least in the West that it still continues to make its rounds even here and now?

Perhaps there was a good reason for not believing them, since no one can find three losses, and as it turns out not even one....

Re: ID Bf110 crew lost 25 October 1941

Hi guys

Well, can we confirm that Sorokin crash-landed on 25 October as a result of air action - otherwise why did he trek for several days, necessitating the amputation of his frost-bitten feet?

Cheers

Hi

It seems that the whole story has no document evidences. Sorokin indeed crash-landed on 25 October 1941 but the exact cause of his loss is unclear. This source states that his MiG-3 suffered an engine malfunction:

Re: ID Bf110 crew lost 25 October 1941

Hi again.

Just found this post on Russian forum vif2ne (http://www.vif2ne.ru/nvi/forum/arhprint/134744):

Unfortunately, my English is not good enough, so only a Google translate...

For the case with Zakhar Sorokin , took place to be from 25 to 29 October 1941. Referring to archival documents TSVMA . The first fifteen days of October 1941 were relatively warm and the temperature was above zero, but at night it freezes slightly . Somewhere on the 15th of October the temperature dropped below zero near , and was relatively strong wind, and therefore before the 25th of any thick ice , able to withstand a plane on the lakes has not appeared. October 25 afternoon the temperature rose above freezing and rain . At 10:52 airfield rises pair of MiGs , with the task of patrolling in the area of the Kola Bay - Island Kil'din . Sorokin task performed and Sokolov . Circled at an altitude of 6000 meters. Rain in the area was 600-1000 meters. Visibility about 10 km . In the area of Kildin slave Sokolov lost sight of the lead . Sokolov returned alone and landed at the airfield at 11:54 . Lieutenant Sorokin for some unknown reason did not return to the airfield . No opposition from the enemy in the area patrolled by Sorokin and Sokolov was not. In the search for Sorokin after 15:00 flew five " Gull ", but one of them after a few minutes because of a fault returned . Looking for more than an hour , not rising above 1,000 meters. Mission accomplished. During this departure is no opposition from the enemy was not. The documents that fly to search Sorokin gave positive results have nothing. Based on the entries in the SAP 72 missions with more air Sorokina not looking . Who and how discovered until Zakhar Sorokin archive documents have been found. Entry of the pilot appeared Oct. 29 : found in the district of Tyuva - lip has head injury and frostbite feet , was taken to hospital. On the landing site Sorokin reported that he " sat on the lake in the district south of the island of Little Deer ." There are also record that "the search party sent to the aircraft is not found ." Documents 72 SAP plane from November 1 to March 1, 1942 is listed as "not returned from a mission ." Seen were some hopes detect aircraft and evacuate from the place of a forced landing , but at the end of March 1942 the MiG- 3 number 3514 was written off . As made an emergency landing Zakhar Sorokin unlikely to know until we find the plane, but that he was in the tundra, where there is no vegetation, and he moved to the west from the plane breaking ford rivers and streams - this is undoubtedly because found him in the area Tyuva - lips. Now that , in what conditions Sorokin got moving away from the aircraft. On the night of October 26, blew out the south wind and the temperature dropped below 8 degrees. On October 26 the wind increased and the temperature dropped in the area to about 10-12 degrees . On the night of October 27, went light snow , the wind was blowing at a speed of 10m / s, and in the morning the temperature dropped below 20 degrees and remained so during the day . October 28 afternoon , the thermometer rose to 10.8 degrees, but the wind increased in gusts over 14 m / s with snowy charges. By evening the wind a little verse , but the thermometer fell to -20-22 ° C. On the morning of October 29, the temperature in the area north-west of Murmansk was -12 degrees, the wind is weak unstable , sometimes it was snowing. As Sorokin moved to Vaenga only he knew . Warm up and dry off in the area under such severe conditions is almost impossible. Besides, he moved with head injury (possibly during the landing on the aircraft ) . As a result - frostbite feet. For four days Zahar covered the distance of at least 70-80 km . The terrain in the area , along which the rock Sorokin and highly rugged valleys of rivers and streams . On the eve of the ill-fated Flight Zakhar Sorokin was appointed deputy commander of the squadron . Where and under what circumstances, born legends about " Messers " in the air and on the ice , a firefight with German pilots , evil shepherds and other adventures in Zahara archival data is not written. Dogfight with " Messerschmitt Bf110» October 25, 1942 were nine Hurricanes of 78 IAP Northern Fleet Air Force . Battle occurred over the front line near the river Western People . The parties had no losses . But it was when a group of four " Gull " looking plane Sorokin.
