Hi Revi16,
it is Fw 190 A-5 WNr. 01501257 manufactured by Focke Wulf in Marienburg in March 1943. On 04-Mar-43 lost 100% due to AA fire in Tunisia during a combat mission while with Stab Schl.G 2. Uffz. Johne was wounded.

Regards,
Norbert

Hi,

A little more. I believe that this aircraft was actually lost in May 1943 (either 2 or 4 May). The 28-year old pilot, Rudolf Johne, died on 5 May 1943. The aircraft was found by the Allies at La Sebala Satellite Field, Tunisia, later that month, and they noted that it carried the code 'D + '.

Cheers,
Andrew A.

Re: FW-190 Wnr. 1257?

I was wondering about the date lost. I believe 1227 was completed in April 1943 though possibly later than 1257 as 1227 was reworked as a U3 - outer cannons omitted etc.

1257 still seems to have the outer cannons so was probably a straight A model. Whatever the situation, 1257 was very new. You can see the overpainted factory code and was still operating as a ground attack aircraft. Nice as 1227 was White A.

One of the photos shows an Fw190's marked up as + E?

Re: FW-190 Wnr. 1257?

Hi all,

I had a closer look at the photos shown at the WAF link provided by Revi16.

The photo album page shows 3 different Fw 190 that presumably were all photographed at La Sebala. In Arthy/Jessen's excellent book "Fw in North Africa" {1} an Allied list of captured aircraft on page 149 indicates that 4 Fw 190 were found at La Sebala. So, the album page probably shows 3 out of 4.

One can be easily identified by the code "E+". One is burnt out and is probably the one that is mentioned in the Allied list as "burnt out". So, the 3rd Fw 190 on the photos must be either W.Nr. 1257 or the 4th Fw 190 in the Allied list. The photos show a Fw 190 that is upside down and features a White propeller spinner (which would rather indicate a SKG10 machine, but in the book about Sicily by the same authors there is also a colour profile of a Sch.G.2 machine with a white propeller spinner).

What is unclear to me is:
  • Why does {1} indicate 7./Sch.G.2 when the loss list mentioned Stab/Sch.G.2? (I assume because of the yellow tactical code. Maybe Uffz. Johne belonged to Stab?)
  • Why does {1} indicate the loss happened on 2 May 1943, when the loss list mentioned 4 May 1943?
  • Why does {1} attribute the loss to Allied fighters when the loss list mentioned AA fire?
  • Where did he (crash)land? At La Sebala? Was it a Belly landing? Did the Germans bring the aircraft to La Sebala as a decoy?

I hope someone can shed some more light into the history of W.Nr. 1257. A photo of the captured aircraft would be amazing.

Kind regards

Roger

Re: FW-190 Wnr. 1257?

Hi all,

According to an Allied list, 4 Fw 190 II./Sch.G. 2 wrecks were found at La Sebala and one SKG 10 wreck without tactical code (W.Nr. 0155 869). The photo album page shown at WAF (see link in the 1st post of this thread) shows 3 different Fw 190. One was Black E, one was a burnt-out wreck and one shows a turned-over wreck.

W.Nr. 1257 "D+" may be the turned-over wreck as it was not burnt-out when found. The turned-over wreck has a completely white spinner, which would point more towards SKG10 (although at least one Fw 190 of II./Sch.G. 2 in Sicily is known that also featured a completely white spinner). On a close-up of the side view, one can recognize what appears to be the first letter of its Stammkennzeichen over the white fuselage band. It was a "T". It probably was the SKG 10 wreck W.Nr. 0155 869 as it did not carry any markings. Does anybody know the St.Kz. of 0155 869?

The following Fw 190 A-5 with T as the first letter in their StKz belonged to SKG 10 or JG 2:

TD+SS W.Nr. 150881 III./SKG 10 June 1943
TJ+GH W.Nr. 896 9./SKG 10 May 1943 (maybe a typo and this was 869?)
TJ+GL W.Nr. 900 III./SKG 10 June 1943
TJ+YA W.Nr. ? 10./SKG 10 April 1943
TJ+YB W.Nr. ? 6./JG 2 March 1943

Last but not least, I am trying to find out more about the history of W.Nr. 1257 (see my previous post). I'd be glad if anybody has some more information or a copy of the original Allied list of captured aircraft at La Sebala.

Cheers,

Roger
