269 Squadron Hudson combats July 1940

Hi guys

I haven't seen the Squadron ORB yet, but has anyone any information re two combats in July 1940:

21 July: Believe Hudson shot down Do18 of 1./406 (Neumerkel crew)

23 July: Sgt Phillips claimed Do18

Any help welcomed

Cheers
Brian

Nothing for 21 Jul 40. On 23 Jul 40, Hudson C/269 Sqn destroyed a Do 18 at 1942 hrs & F/269 Sqn had an inconclusive encounter with 2 Do 18s at 2025 hrs

Brian,

Something is wrong with your 21 July reference. Your other query is as follows:

1./KüFlGr. 406 Dornier Do18G-1 (0857). Damaged in action with Hudson of No.269 Squadron and ditched in the North Sea 115 miles east of Karmo 8.40 p.m. FF Oberfw Karl Moritz, BO Oberlt zur See Dieter Neumerkel, BF Fw Fritz Rogge, and BM Fw Gerhard Schultz took to dinghy which they radioed was damaged and all subsequently missing. Aircraft K6+FH 100% write-off.

Many thanks, Peter

My source for the Do18 on 21 July was 'The Battle of Britain Then & Now' !!

Re: 269 Squadron Hudson combats July 1940

There appears to be a bit of confusion. According to 'The Other Few' this combat took place on 22 July & another combat on 23 Jul which resulted in a Do 18 being damaged. According to the CC Instum, these combats occurred on 23 Jul in PCGR 5824 and TCTA 0050 respectively. D/224 Sqn also had an inconclusive combat in YCTA 0000. The Other Few said that the combat on 23 Jul also resulted in the Hudson being damaged-this was more likely M/269 Sqn which damaged a Do 18 0415 hrs 24 Jul 40 in XZWT 3200 & then 15 mins later, V/269 Sqn reported an inconclusive meeting with a Do 18 in XZTA 1014. Suggest you get hold of the 269 Sqn ORB!

Hi Chris

Apologies for the delayed response - I hope to get to the N/A next week to check 269's ORB and those of several other squadrons.

Cheers
Brian

Chris,

I'm not familiar with the book "The Other Few." Can you provide more details?

Thanks,
Tom
