V-1 claim by F/L "Duke" Warren
According to 2nd Tactical Air Force (Shores & Thomas), F/L "Duke" Warren of 66 Sqn. claimed a V-1 destroyed on 03.02.45. There is no mention of this claim in Shores' Those Other Eagles or in Diver! Diver! Diver! (Cull). Both Warren twins, Bruce and Douglas, were apparently flight commanders in 66 Sqn. at this time and both were nicknamed "Duke"!
Can anyone confirm or refute this claim. If legit, which Warren brother was the claimant. Thanks, Tom |

Re: V-1 claim by F/L "Duke" Warren
Bruce was Duke I, Douglas Duke II. Bruce was killed in a flying accident after the war. Douglas's autobiography makes no mention of shooting down a V1 only that Rolf Berg was shot down & killed on 3 Feb 45?

Thanks Bruce and Chris. Given the evidence, or lack thereof, available, I'm inclined to believe that the report of this claim is in error.

Re: V-1 claim by F/L "Duke" Warren
If you put a post on http://www.rafcommands.com/ headed something like "Warren brothers RCAF" then Hugh Halliday is likely to come by, he checks in fairly frequently and he has done a great deal of research on RCAF/Canadian pilots. Chris Thomas got most of the material for the 2TAF claims and losses tables from 2TAF daily/weekly command documents eg daily op sum

Don't be too quick Tom!
66 Sqn F540 3/2/45: 'A V1 was shot down by F/L D. Warren and it crashed and exploded on the South of the M....' The name of the river is hard to read, but presumably the Meuse. |

Re: V-1 claim by F/L "Duke" Warren
Now THAT is some convincing evidence! Thanks, Bruce. It seems odd that in his autobio Doug Warren would not have mentioned this event which at that stage of the war was a bit unusual.

Re: V-1 claim by F/L "Duke" Warren
Hello,
I am wondering if there are others claims on V-1 by fighters this day and if this claim could be linked to this: On 3rd February 45, at 12.15, a V-1 was shot down by an allied aircraft. It felt near Conneux-Conjoux (10 km E of Dinant so where the Meuse River lays), hamlet "Fonds de Bry" where it dug a crater of 5 m deep and 10 m width. No victim. The body of the flying bomb was pierced by aircraft bullets. Best regards ClinA-78 |
