Unidentified wreck in Italy (1944)
Can someone identify this wreck, reportedly photographed in Italy (Fondi, Latium?), in 1944?
There are two coloured numbers visible on the rear fuselage: "28" (the font appears to be "American" style): ![]() Thanks,

A-36 Apache. The serial on the fuselage rather than the fin is a big clue.

Re: Unidentified wreck in Italy (1944)
Hello Dennis,
I could be way off but. Fonti, Latium, Italy. Most likely to be Fonti, Latina, Italy. Just a little way inland on the West coast of Italy north of Naples. No, just found via Google map very near Anzio, a place(?) named "Via Fondi, Nettuno, Rome, Latium, Italy". The only A-36 that I could find with an MACR in "Flag3" was one that came down near a place named Fondi. A-36a serial number 42-84050 15th February 1944, MACR 2407. Pilot baled safe, and became a POW in Stalag Luft 1. Name was Stanley J. Campbell 2Lt. O-675744. There are at least 50 A-36 MACR's for Italy in 1944. All the very best Alex |
