Question of numbers...

Hi all!

Have been studying a photo of JG 300:s base at Borkheide, autumn 1944.

I agree that they are G-14/AS, as the small bulge on the cowling is visible.

When I look at the number(s) however, I can naturally see the "1" just beside the BK. However, beside the "1" can also be seen a "5".

As the two numbers are not aligned with one another, and too close, I have ruled out a sloppy groundcrew.

So, my question is, is it a "5" with a painted out "1" or the other way around?

Furthermore, the aircraft in the background also seem to carry the number "1".

If anyone can enlighten me on this matter, I would be grateful.

Humbly yours,

Angantyr

Re: Question of numbers...

Angatyr,

You made the point! There is a "5" following the "1".
I want, too, confirm Falkeins guess; Mottling being different on cowling - plus some shadows and small bulge .. - looks pretty much like a G-14/AS.

Regards, Franck.

Re: Question of numbers...

Hi!

And thank you for the feedback. I do however begin to suspect that it IS however a number "15", as, it seems that the number(s) have the same tonal value, and that the "high top" on the number "1" is in fact, an illusion. As far as I know, the normal procedure for changing an aircrafts number would be to simply overpaint the previous number, and paint the new one on top of the old one.

All the Best!

Humbly yours,

Angantyr
