Re: Translation required!

Hi Melvin:

the original reads:
"Senden Ihnen hiermit das versprochene Bild vom schönen Allerforst. Mit deutschem Gruss! Familie Deittert (?), Trillserstraße (?) 15.
Es kommt etwas verspätet. Wir wünschen Ihnen recht viele frohe Stunden.
Breitzke (?), Gefr. [Gefreiter]
Hptm. [Hauptmann] v. St....."

My take on the translation:
"We hereby send you, as promised, the picture from the beautiful Aller forest. With a german salute! The Deittert family. Trillserstraße 15 [An adress. Google found one in Düsseldorf]
It arrives a little late. We wish you quite some happy hours.
Private Breitzke
Captain v. St...."

It's odd that this photo was signed by two different groups of people, one family and two soldiers (with quite a difference in rank). But that's how it is...

Hope this helped,
Christian

Re: Translation required!

Thanks a lot Christian,

I appreciate your efforts! I think we can say now that the Luftwaffe Gefreiter in photo is Breitzke.

Regards,

Melvin

Re: Translation required!

Does the last line say: Hptm. b. Stabe?

Re: Translation required!

Hello Mervin and all,
last words I would say definite the place where the picure was made.
Written from himself.
Yes not easy to read but in my mind not reading as Captain...., just more a place.
Best regards
Manfred

Re: Translation required!

Hello Brian,
yes, also I read b. Stade.
May "b." is used as shortform of "bei" , at/near.
Best regards
Manfred

Re: Translation required!

Hello Manfred, I wondered if it was 'Kamp bei Stade' but my German is not too good I do not know if Kamp would be used for an airfield or barracks,

Re: Translation required!

The more I look at it, the more I would go with John's proposal "Hptm. b. Stabe", vulgo "Hauptmann beim Stabe" (Captain at the Staff). Perhaps this was some kind of joke by Private Breitzke.

Also thanks to sis for pointing out the Ellerforst. Both, this forest and the Trillserstraße can be found in or near Düsseldorf, so I think that's correct.
