When was the airfield Zerbst captured by the Allieds?
Hello,
I am trying to find out when exactly the airfield at Zerbst was captured. One source states 28 April 1945, but according to a flight log, there was still a training flight recorded on 2 May 1945. Which unit was still at Zerbst when the airfield was captured? Regards, Roger |

Re: When was the airfield Zerbst captured by the Allieds?
Zerbst bombed into ruins on 16 April (town 80% destroyed) and surrendered to the Americans on 28 April. On the same date, Fliegerhorst Zerbst was captured by elements of the U.S. 83rd Infantry Division. The Americans turned it over to forces of the Soviet 33rd Army in May.
The unit still there may have been I./KG(J) 54 (Mar-Apr 45). http://www.forgottenairfields.com/germany/saxony-anhalt/anhalt-bitterfeld/zerbst-s384.html http://aryanmusic.net/e107_plugins/content/content.php?content.38 L. |
