Re: Staffelkapitans 906
Hello, Rudi Schmidt´s "Achtung-Torpedos los!"-book tells about Werner Klümper, that he was "...Staffelkapitän einer Seeflieger-Gruppe...", later (end of 1941) "Ausbildungsleiter" of the Kampfschulgeschwader 2 (a torpedo training unit) in Grosseto/Italy. Up from July 1942 he was Kommandeur of I./KG 26, Kommodore of KG 26 from january/february 1943 until october 1944. Knight´s cross: 29.08.1943, survived ww II.

Re: Staffelkapitans 906
Hi Adam, I´ve got news about Werner Klümper. He was a member of Legion Condor´s AS/88 in spanish civil war, fitted with He 60 and He 59 torpedo bombers. He claimed the sinking of merchant ship "Delfina" (02/02/37, with regular bombs, the torpedo failed) and captured the "Nuria" (31/01/37, a nearly unbelievable story...).

Re: Staffelkapitans 906
Heuser,
Thanks for the additions. I knew he was a Civil War vet but know nothing about his exploits or awards. Can you tell me where you got the story about the Nuria capture along with details? Regards Adam |

Re: Staffelkapitans 906
Hello, I found it in the "Legion Condor"-book by Karl Ries and Hans Ring.
The He 59 of AS/88 became order to sink a merchant ship with 200-400 "red" volunteers on its way from Oran to Cartagena. But Klümper used a trick. A He 60 "bombs" the ship with two reports: "stop immediately-no wireless or you will be torpedoed" and another with a new course and the order to follow it strictly. After dusk a submarine will guard the ship on its way. Then Klümpers w.o. starts a lively radio telephony with the (imaginary!!!) sub und it replied. At the following day they found the "Nuria" still on course and guide the ship to Melilla. I couldn´t find any awards for Werner Klümper in this book. There are documents for the two ships, but: signed by H. Göring in 1941!!! Regards, Heuser |
