SS BETSWOOD crew 'shot down' enemy aircraft

Hi guys

It seems that the crew of the British steamer SS Betswood claimed shooting down an attacking aircraft during a raid on Shoreham, and that three of the crew received awards. This may have happened in 1940.

I can't seem to find anything relevant on Google.

Any ideas?

Cheers
Brian

Re: SS BETSWOOD crew 'shot down' enemy aircraft

Hi Brian, S.S.. BETSWOOD was built in 1936 for the FRANCE. FENWICK & CO to carry coal between ports on the north east coast and London and English channel ports. For information about an aircraft being shot down try getting in touch with the local paper SUNDERLAND ECHO as they should have details about it, also try the TYNE & WEAR Archives. Just a small note about BETSWOOD it completed the most trips in convoys between the north east and the English channel ports the convoys were nicknamed the coalscuttle brigade. Hope this helps. peter.r

Thanks Dennis

However, I still can't find anything relevant!

Hopefully - and probably - the official document MT9/3360 quoted by TNA will provide the answers.

I will respond accordingly following my visit to TNA next week.

Cheers
