Gefreiter Alfred Warelmann (I.(Z)/LG 1)

Claimed 4 "kills" over Poland.
Was he part of the Stabschwarm?
And what was its subsequent fate?

Thanks.

Chris

Re: Gefreiter Alfred Warelmann (I.(Z)/LG 1)

Made at least 7 claims -

Warrelmann, Alfred, Gefr., 3.(Z), I., LG 1, 04-Sep-39, PZL P.24, nordwestlich Rozan: 3500m, 17.35, 1., 19, , yes, Warrelmann, Alfred, Gefr., 3.(Z), I., LG 1, 04-Sep-39, PZL P.24, nordwestlich Rozan: 3500m, 17.35, 2., 20, , yes, Warrelmann, Alfred, Gefr., 3.(Z), I., LG 1, 09-Sep-39, Mewa, 15km östlich Siedlce: 1200m, 11.05, 3., 27, , yes,
Warrelmann, Alfred, Gefr., 3.(Z), I., LG 1, 10-Sep-39, PZL P.23, Dêbe Wielke: 100m, 14.10, 4., 29, , yes,
Warrelmann, Alfred, Uffz., 15.(Z), V., LG 1, 16-May-40, Hawk-75A, nordwestlich Pontfaverger: 2500m, 06.55, 5., 41, , yes, C.2035/II, Anerk: Nr. 53, C. 2036/I Anerk: Nr.-/OKL
Warrelmann, Alfred, Uffz., 15.(Z), V., LG 1, 16-May-40, Hawk-75A, nordwestlich Pontfaverger: 2500m, 06.55, 6., 42, , yes, C.2035/II, Anerk: Nr. 54, C. 2036/I Anerk: Nr.-/OKL
Warrelmann, Alfred, Fw., 3., I., NJG 3, 03-Aug-41, Stirling, südwestlich Werder, 01.48, 7., -, , yes,

And from notes I wrote on Ries Rudder Markings book -

p.82 (upper) This is not the machine of Oblt. Werner Methfessel of 15.(Z)/LG 1 who was KIA over France on 17-May-40. Other photos from this series reveal the ‘England-Blitz’ badge which shows these planes to be from 2. and 3./NJG 3, probably in early to mid-1941. The aircraft in this photo are coded, from the background to foreground, L 1 + L K, L 1 + B L, L 1 + G (or C) L and L 1 + I L (with 8 victories). This last is a Bf 110D-3 WNr. 3686. It is the machine of Fw. Albert Warrelmann who equaled Methfessel’s score in leading the I.(Z)/LG 1 with four victories in Poland, these being claimed within the first 11 days of that campaign according to van Ishoven. Warrelmann and his Bordfunker, Uffz. Bieg, were both WIA by enemy fire over Gadsdorf on 8-Sep-41 in Bf 110C-4 WNr. 3649 while with the 3./NJG 3. The plane was a total write-off. No other details of his career are known. WNr. 3686, still on strength with the I./NJG 3 and probably now coded ‘D5’, was written off on 7-Aug-42, crashing due to engine problems at Vlachtwedde. The crew abandoned the aircraft and reached the ground safely. Shores, Fledgling Eagles, pgs. 194, 359; Held/Nauroth, Die deutsche Nachtjagd, pgs. 105, 108-109, photos at top of page for all, p. 177 center; van Ishoven, Messerschmitt Bf 110 at War, pp. 19-20 txt., p. 126 bottom photo; IWM/PRO, LW Loss Reports, VI & X.

Jim,

Thanks for this very complete answer.
Do you think that this Bf 110 C-1 wearing the code of Stab I.(Z)/LG 1 and four white bars on the rudder could be Warelmann's?

Chris

Re: Gefreiter Alfred Warelmann (I.(Z)/LG 1)

CJE,

The photo you posted is L1+XB flown by the Gruppenkommander, Hptm Horst Liensberger, at Villacoublay Airfield, Vélizy, France, circa June 24 or 26, 1940. What you're thinking are victory tabs is a W.Nr., possibly 1349 or maybe 2349. As far as I know, no photos have ever surfaced showing Warrelmann's 110s during 1939-40, and I've searched hard for them. However, his 3./NJG3 110, L1+IL, with eight victory tabs was well photographed.

Regards,

Re: Gefreiter Alfred Warelmann (I.(Z)/LG 1)

A little additional question re. Warrelmann's daylight claims; which of these claims were subsequently confirmed by the OKL/RLM?

Cheers, Theo

Re: Gefreiter Alfred Warelmann (I.(Z)/LG 1)

CJE,

As a further answer to your original question, I've done a lot of work on I-V.(Z)/LG1 constructing reference packages for 24 aircraft color profiles, several of which have more than one aircraft represented; about half of which are finished. I have copies all of the photos and most of the research materials compiled by Ludwig von Eimannsberger on that unit. The unit Stab section from the beginning of the war forward is known, and I've seen no evidence that Warrelmann was ever a member of the I-V.(Z)/LG1 Stab section during 1939-40, up to its dissolution in early October, 1940.

Regards,

Re: Gefreiter Alfred Warelmann (I.(Z)/LG 1)

Of the 7 Warrelmann claims documented only two are from the OKL source - the rest from other published sources;

Warrelmann, Alfred, Uffz., 15.(Z), V., LG 1, 16-May-40, Hawk-75A, nordwestlich Pontfaverger: 2500m, 06.55, 5., 41, , yes, C.2035/II, Anerk: Nr. 53, C. 2036/I Anerk: Nr.-/OKL/PT: LG 1, I, 3000m?
