Catalina FP525

Hi guys

FP525 of 330 Squadron was forced down by U-606 on 21 September 1942.

Lt CJA Stansburg was the pilot - who were the crew?

Cheers
Brian

Re: Catalina FP525

The pilot was Lt. Carl Johan August Stansberg (not Stansburg). The only other crew member I know of is Per Devold.

Re: Catalina FP525

Hello Brian and Nils,

I assume that this thread is not unrelated to my post yesterday - http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/showpo...7&postcount=22 .

May I ask whether either one of you can shine any more light on RAF Catalina operations from Soviet bases? Russian-language sources are largely silent on this issue.

Regards,

Paul

Hello Brian,

That's no problem, I am sure a few forum members will keep looking.

Thanks to Nils' information, I was able to find the further details that you wanted online:
Crew details for 2 Catalinas lost by 330 Squadron

Re: Catalina FP525

The ORB of 330 Sqn for the period is available online there:
http://www.luftkrigsskolen.no/airfor...O/Default.aspx

Search Operations Record Book on the above webpage.

The ORB is divided into A and B Flights, and not ordered chronologically. Form 540 for B Flight is page 426, Form 541 is page 440 but this Catalina is not included !

Re: Catalina FP525

Thanks guys

Obviously there is a story behind the ditching and subsequent rescue of the crew.

Do we have such a story?

Cheers

Re: Catalina FP525

Hello Laurent and Bas,

Thank you for making the rest of us aware of these sources!

On the topic of what sources Hank Welting may have consulted, this book may be a possibility, since it is cited by uboat.net on the U-606 page - http://www.uboat.net/books/reviews/284.html - U-Boat Versus Aircraft.

Regards,

Paul

Re: Catalina FP525

Re Henk Weltings' list. Please note that the acronym RNoAF came into being in the late 1950s. During the war, it was RNAF.
