But most of the photos show aircraft with pre-war aircraft codes. Only 2 or 3 taken in Poland.

"Pre-war" code change to wartime-standard (numbers into letters) was from April 1939, so all can be taken in Germany, even the one "dated" - in my opinion. Summer 1939 most likely, and one pic shows planes also in older colours, plus new and new codes. -Ed

But older colours were seen on Do 17Es of KG77 during Polish Campaign. During the course of the campaign stab/KG77 and I./KG77 were re-equipped with Do 17Z bombers.

Ah, do we not write Do 17 E´s ?
American designations do not, for example B-17G-...... http://www.designation-systems.net/non-us/germany.html |

Re: Pictures: Do 17Es of 5 & 6 / KG 155 and KG 77 in Poland (?)
OK, forgetting proper designation of aircraft for the moment, where and when could these pictures have been taken?
As to KG 77, a quick search indicates that it was formed on 1 May 1939 and equipped with Do 17 E aircraft. It also had the Do 17 E on 1 September 1939. On 1 May 1939, KG 77 was based at Prag-Kbely, Brünn and Königgratz. On September 1 1939, it was based at Grottkau and Brieg. KG 155 became KG 55 on 1 May 1939. But interestingly, Smith & Creek indicate that the unit was equipped with He 111 P aircraft on 1 May 1939 and 1 September 1939.

Smith & Creek can be correct. http://www.ww2.dk/air/kampf/kg77.htm
Key can perhaps be seen here http://www.ww2.dk/air/kampf/kg158.html (KG 155 first became KG 158, then KG 77 on 01.04.1939) -Ed Last edited by edNorth; 9th January 2016 at 00:06. |
