Oberfeldwebel Siegfried Simon - 1./KGr 100

Good morning to all,

May I ask your help on to the career of Oberfeldwebel Siegfried Simon, from 1./KGr 100.
I would like to know his early training and number of missions flown in WW2. He seems to have flown with Ln.Abt.100 and KGr.100 in Poland, Norway and England; and most probably over Russia too, since he was awarded the DKiG on the 02nd January 1942.
His late career and what happened to him later is unknown to me (on the references I do have, so far).
Was he promoted to Officer rank lately? Was he wounded in action or flying as a flight instructor?

Thank you for any help on to discovering this airman's full career.

Adriano

He was one of the originals and survived the war as he helped Ken Wakefield and was a member of the KG 100 Association. I have one (poor) photo of him. No evidence of being an officer and no doubt long gone now

BRIAN,

Please do accept my GRATEFUL thank you for enhancing my knowledge!
You clarified why he wasn't awarded the RK or promoted to Officer rank, later (because he was a POW).
The relevant Flight Schools he attended are of interest as well as his early time on gliders.
THANK YOU so much!

CHRIS: I imagined he (Obfw Simon) had survived...because his contact with Wakefield and contribution with pictures to that early work on KGr 100. Do you happen to know if that KG 100 Association is still "alive"?

THANK YOU very much for your help!

Adriano

OBS: I still DO NOT KNOW why Major Hans-Georg Bätcher did not received a FULL Biography! There is someone working on that field???

Siegfried Simon was a very experienced Luftwaffe Pathfinder pilot and it was only logical that he joined I./KG66. Hence his shootdown over England must have been a very severe blow for a start-up unit such as I./KG66..Postwar, Siegfried Simon joined the I./KG66 Association ("Traditionsgemeinschaft") possibly as early as its founding in 1954 (but at least since 1958 according to a document). His name was still on the 1988 members list, but he likely died soon after that as my copy of this list has his name crossed out under the remark "deceased" and the fact that he's not on the 1991 list.

NB: The I./KG66 Association was officially disbanded in 2004, with some local diehards soldiering on as late as 2008... Today there's hardly anybody left anymore and the veterans who do are in their early nineties...

HTH,

Marcel

PS Adriano: What's your interest in Siegfried Simon, if I may ask?
