Trying to research these two guys. Flew from Wiesbad, Me 110 G-4, Ident 9-IP. Claimed Stirling over Ludwigshafen night of 6th Sep '43. Understand they used Shrage Musik and were hit in return. Crashed beside home airfield, but survived. Any info appreciated.

In the book by Michael Balls it says:

6. Staffel NJG 1
Aerodrome Erbenheim at Wiesbaden
Me 110 G-4, Wnr. 5356 and code G9 + IP

Lt. Heinz Höppner, pilot wounded
Uffz. Alfons Löw, Bordschütze wounded

After having shot down an enemy aeroplane, they were themselves hit in the wing and the left engine. Crashed during an emergency landing outside the airfield. Plane a write off

Hi, guys.

Interesting information. Seems that Balss must have used the NVM for the loss, as GenQu lists states the following:

So, assuming Balss is correct I should update the name of the pilot to Höppner, Heinz I guess, add the callsign and update the WNr of the aircraft.

Anyone have the NVM?? so that we can make a consensus with regards to the WNr. I really do not like to change too much based on a publication rather than an original document.

Hehe... wonder what Balss thinks about being called Balls...

My thanks to you both, Christian and Andreas, for the information.
It fits exactly with what I have been told from a Ludwigshafen historian, who has been researching the event, as he witnessed the crashed aircraft a day after it was brought down. His precis of what happened is on my website under "Hunters" and confirms the pilot as Heinz-wolfgang Hoppner, and the crewman as Alphons Low. Tim Woods record of German claims gives the Staffel as II (not sure if it is Eleven or two) But my German contact has it down as 6. NJG1. The aircraft and Number are confirmed as Wn- 5356, Aircraft Me110, G-4 and Low's rank as Unteroffizier. The base was confirmed as Erbenheim, between the towns of Mainz and Weisbaden. The Americans use it today. My contact is publishing the info in the "Jagerblatt" magazine, to see if he can dig out more.
