Max Nairz and Rolf Schulte?
Can anyone give particulars of these two pilots from the 9. JG/53
I picked up a few pieces but most importantly I would like to know of their demise or if they survived the war etc. I believe Nairz was a 12 kill ace and Schulte I'm not sure of. I'm mostly interested in their Med. tour 1943. Thanks Scott |

Re: Max Nairz and Rolf Schulte?
I've found additional research showing Max Nairz was a POW in 1944, so chances are he survived the war "hopefully". Is there a place I can check to see if he is still alive?
Regarding Rolf Schulte, I've found that he was credited with 4 kills, although I've only located 3 so far. I suspect he didn't survive the war due to a lack of evidence past about Sept. 1943. I'd guess he might have been a replacement pilot attached to 9. Jg/53 and had little experience given the time location and other books I've read on the subject of the war at this time. Can anyone expand on this information? Thanks Scott |

Re: Max Nairz and Rolf Schulte?
Hi Scott
On 10 February 1944, Feldwebel Max Nairz led a Rotte of 9./JG 53 and a few kilometres north of Nettuno, over Allied territory, was attacked by RAF Spitfire fighters. In the ensuing combat, Nairz was shot down in Bf 109 G-6 (WNr 140042) “Yellow 6” + I. Nairz baled out of his stricken machine with some difficulty. He was slightly injured in the incident and was captured by Allied troops soon after landing. Unteroffizier Rolf Schulte suffered engine failure on 28 January 1944 necessitating a forced-landing of his Bf 109 G-6 (WNr 160634) "White 15" + | south of Rome. He sustained injuries in the incident. Whether of not these injuries prevented his return to combat duty is not stated.
