Georg Kiefner - 17 August 1944

Hi guys

Leutnant Georg Kiefner (12 victories), Staffelkapitän of 1./JG 26, was shot down by Flak northeast of Chartres on 17 August 1944. I understand that he was unhurt and therefore this incident will not appear in the casualty lists but it is my understanding that his flight books survive. If any one has access to these is it known what was the Werknummer of the aircraft involved? Any help will be appreciated.

Horrido!

Leo

Leider kein Werknummer. Of COURSE, the four from the II/JG 26 that fell to Flak that same day had THEIR Werknummern recorded, but isn't that the way?

He was shot down by Flak after claiming an observation plane. While he was the Kapitän of the 1./JG 26 (and seems to have preferred "5" as his regular machine, with WNr.173805 from 24.August) he was flying "Winkel" of the I/JG 26 when he had to parachute on17.Aug. 1944 NE of Chartres.

Hi GRM

Yes, that is usually the way it is. I was afraid that this would be one of those cases and of course it was. Another example is that of Leutnant Friedrich Bachmann (5 victories) of 3./JG 2 when he was shot down in aerial combat in the Hesse area on 25 February 1945 - of the 16 losses of JG 2 that day the Werknummern of all but two are known and conveniently his is one of those two cases. Most annoying indeed!

Horrido!
