Luftwaffe bombers routes to Liverpool & Bristol 1940

Hi all,

I would like to ask for help regarding the Luftwaffe bombers routes to their target in the 1940, particularly August - December.

Were the standard routes while raiding Liverpool, Manchester, Bristol etc. directly to the north after leaving the French coast or round over the sea through the St George's Channel/Irish Sea and then turn to the right to the target?

My question has arisen after reading several accounts of RAF airmen under training in 1940 claiming they were listening overhead to the sound of German bombers engines heading to bomb the towns mentioned above.

Any confirmation/disconfirmation would be much appreciated.

TIA

Pavel

It depends where they were based. Those airfields more to the east came over Dorset whilst those based to the west clipped Cornwall & Devon & up the Irish Sea. However it is hard to be specific

Thank you a lot for your answer Chris. I am not looking for a specific raids, just trying to verify a general possibility.
