FO E C Stewart Bomber pilot Malta Jan1943

I acquired a nice portrait of pipe smoking Flight Officer EC Stewart.
The caption indicated it was taken on Malta in 1943 and that he was a bomber pilot. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Re: FO E C Stewart Bomber pilot Malta Jan1943

Hello,

Flight Officer? Is he RAF or USAAF?

Possibly, 902213/(87436) A/F/L (Pilot) Edward Colston "Uncle Ted" STEWART DFC RAFVR (104 Sqn RAF)
https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/...upplement/2322

P/O on prob. - 2/11/1940
F/O - 2/11/1941
A/F/L - 2/11/1942

Known to have been at Luqa, Malta in January, 1943 (with 104 Sqn Detachment - 6/11/42 - 21/1/43).

Does your man have a moustache?

Photo, and several mentions of F/L Stewart, in the following publication:

Wellington Wings An RAF Intelligence Officer in the Western Desert.
Chappell, F. R.
London:William Kimber,1980.
pp.122, 129, 141-5 and 185 (photo between pages 99-97*).

* Photo (upper right) caption reads:

At the Modern Imperial Hotel, Sliema (Malta, Jan, 1943): seated at the front are Flight Lieutenant Stewart** DFC and Flight Lieutenant Baker, Adjutant of 104 Squadron. Standing behind them are Pilot Officer Daeppen, Squadron Leader Jacklyn [sic], DFC and bar, and the hotel proprietor.

** Smoking a cigarette, but with what appears to be a pipe in his top left pocket.

Col.
