Gerhard Herzog 3/NJG1 crew names sought
I am looking for the names of the crew of Ofw Gerhard Herzog 3/NJG 1 when he flew Me110's in 1941. Is there someone who can help me with the werkenummer of his ME110 and also if he was based at Eindhoven in March 1941??? Many Thanks in advance,

Re: Gerhard Herzog 3/NJG1 crew names sought
Herzog's regular BF when with 1./ZG 76 was Fw Paul Wellenkötter but whether he flew with him all the time in 1941 is not known. He would have flown a number of Bf 110s in 1941 so without his logbook (he was killed 20 Oct 43) one cannot say for certain. I./NJG 1 was based mainly at Gütersloh and Venlo in 1941, moving from the former to the latter in March 1941 I believe

Re: Gerhard Herzog 3/NJG1 crew names sought
Many Thanks Chris for your contribution. The info I have retrieved is that when he crashed his HE219 on the 20th October 1943(near Kettenburg)after an airbattle his BF Uffz Hans Weiker was killed and his BS Uffz Schmidt survived. During this battle Gerhard was badly wounded on his shoulder and said to his crew to bale out when he obviously tried to land his plane. I also have heard that he rammed his aircraft.

Re: Gerhard Herzog 3/NJG1 crew names sought
Hello Adrian,
I./NJG 1 was at Eindhoven between 28 February - 18 March 1941, before moving to Venlo airfield. On the night of 27-28 March, Ofw. Herzog and his Bordfunker Fw. Gross brought down a 78 Sqn Whitley and a 207 Sqn Manchester. Sources differ from where the crew took off. Author Marcel Hogenhuis writes they took off from Venlo airfield (Vliegvelden in Oorlogstijd) but author Theo Boiten writes they took off from Eindhoven (Nachtjagd Combat Archive The Early Years). Kind regards, Timon |

Re: Gerhard Herzog 3/NJG1 crew names sought
20 Okt 1943 Gerhard Herzog seems to be wounded when he was struck in an airbattle, gave his crew the chance to bale out and sadly he ended up in a crash which he was killed. Can anyone tell me who was responsable for shooting down his ME110??
Many Thanks, Adrian |

Re: Gerhard Herzog 3/NJG1 crew names sought
According to the GQM loss return 25 Oct 1943 item 40 his Bf 110 G 720037 collided with an enemy plane/Zusammenstoß mit Feindflugzeug. The entry "Stfw Gerhard Herzog verletzt" was corrected on 25 Nov 1943: "Stfw Herzog gefallen".

Quote:
This was 619 Squadron Lancaster EE114 which impacted at Oerrel, Dedelstorf, Niedersachsen. Stfw. Herzog had taken off from Venlo airfield in the Netherlands. The Bf 110 G-4 impacted at Kettenburg, Visselhövede, Niedersachsen, the crash sites lying 72 kilometres apart. (Nachtjagd Combat Archive 1943) |
