Marko, hi
The Record Group concerned is 373.
Do you have a specific area/sortie in mind?

Re: Aerial images in NARA

Marko,
NARA is currently closed to researchers, and the archivists are working from home. I don't know what the rest of the staff are doing; hopefully something useful, but not out of work.

Link to NARA II at College Park, Maryland, where the photos probably are located: https://www.archives.gov/college-park The top of the page has a current status report.

Enjoy!

Frank.

Re: Aerial images in NARA

Speaking of this RG, if i understood correctly from the initial press release concerning the collaboration between NARA and NCAP who is scanning these frames, at a certain point these should have been available for free on the NARA website, yet though after a good period of time they are only available for sale at NCAP, does anyone know what the final outcome will be ?

Thanks, Mihai

Re: Aerial images in NARA

Here is the original announcement of the digitizing project with NCAP. This press release is from 2015 and announces a five year project, so they may not have completed it yet. I have not seen any more current press releases.

Update .... Ooops forgot the link: https://www.archives.gov/press/press...6/nr16-05.html

A couple of sentences from the announcement.

"Once digitized, the public will be able to access these materials free of charge from National Archives research facilities nationwide. The National Archives will receive a copy of the digital images and metadata for inclusion in its online catalog."

The way it is worded may mean that you only get "free" viewing access if you go to one of the research facilities.

Marko J. and R.S. -

I agree with your interpretation: they mean it will be possible to view the photos free of charge at their facilities, but you won't be able to make copies and take them home with you or have NARA send copies of them to you free of charge.

Last year I bought 183 aerial photos from the Photographic and Cartographic Div. of NARA College Park and it cost me approx. $1,100 for digital copies on a CD. Had they not already been digitized, they would have cost about $65.00 each.

Re: Aerial images in NARA

Recently quoted £500 per image for a piece on Burma that a pilot took whom I was ghost writing a bio about for his widow and family. After filling a freedom of information to MoD

Original cannisters are stored at RAF Wyton in Cambridgeshire, in humidifed underground stores all RAF, USAF, PRU images there are hundreds of thousands of images/reels from around the globe store on wooden lattic shelving.

Unfortunately it would appear from enquires no one has had the foresight or taken the initiative to start scanning / developing the images as a whole its currently being done piece meal on a request by request basis.

Re: Aerial images in NARA

I am afraid that this will become more prevalent. Look at the IWM's prices which for moving images which I believe start at £10+VAT per second!
