Airfields Ssowy and Tschewerkin

Good morning
On July 3, 1942 II./JG 52 transferred to Flugplatz Ssow, while III./JG 52 moved to Tschewerkin. I'm looking for location of both airfields.
All the best

Re: Airfields Ssowy and Tschewerkin

Hello Witold,

both airfields are marked in the grid map of JFV 9/II "Liegeplätze der Jagdverbände an der Ostfront zwischen 27.06.1942 und 3.02.1943" with the note "genaue Lage unbekannt/exact location unknown".
In this map Ssowy is located south-east of Kursk on the line Obojan-Solnzewo-Tim and Tschewerkin east of Charkow on the line Tschugujew-Waluiki.

Regards
Leo

Re: Airfields Ssowy and Tschewerkin

Hello,
maybe it's khutor "Совы" (Sovy) и khutor "Чемеркин" (Chemerkin). These settlements were located next to each other on the border of three districts of the Belgorod Region (previously part of the Kursk Region).

Re: Airfields Ssowy and Tschewerkin

It seems precisely the places: Nowyj-Grinew, Ssowy, Tschewerkin (Tschemerkin in fact), landing fields for JG 52's Stab and the Gruppen.
Thank You Kirche

Gentlemen:

Neither of these two "airfields" are listed in the periodic airfield directories for the UdSSR that have about 20,000 listings. So I think these were relatively level and reasonably flat farm fields or pastures that were used for a few days by single-engine Luftwaffe aircraft. Sort of improvised landing grounds with no facilities. Furthermore, neither are shown in the Flugplatzatlas d. UdSSR, which was produced and updated throughout the war by Abt. Ic/Genst. d.Lw.

Re: Airfields Ssowy and Tschewerkin

It looks You're absolutely right. I wonder if there were any operations from that fields, because there weren't any claims for period 03-09.07.42 for JG 52 pilots.
Many thanks.

Re: Airfields Ssowy and Tschewerkin

In the Grinev area there was a Soviet airfield, where the 820 ShAP was based in 1943 - this is a few kilometers to the north-east. But most likely these are temporary take-off sites.

Hello Witold,

in JFV 9/II are listed:
II./JG 52 Ssowy 3-8 July 1942
15 claims (9 LaGG 3 and 6 Hurricanes), no losses due to enemy action.

3 July 1942 transfer from Belyi-Kolodes to Ssowy 5./JG 52 N.N. Bruchlandung/crashlanding at Ssowy, 100% Bf 109 F-4/R1 13356

III./JG 52 Tschewerkin/Tschemerkin 3-7 July 1942
no claims, no losses.

Regards
Leo

Re: Airfields Ssowy and Tschewerkin

This is the beauty of Military and Aeronautical History...one day, somewhere, someone will find a new document or information and give or write another version.

Congratulations for LEO and De Zeng (for all those researches of years!) and all "on board". I am always learning and enjoying myself reading here...even though not related to my own researches and areas of interest.

Keep going...the Flight Level is always HIGHER here thanks to persons like you.

A.
