Train Strafing 4.May 1945 Haag-St.Valentin/Austria
Hello,
is it possible to get information about the US-Fighter Group strafing an Luftwaffe-train between Haag & St. Valentin in Austria at that day? Either 9th or 12th Airforce. Thanks! h. |

Re: Train Strafing 4.May 1945 Haag-St.Valentin/Austria
The 405th Fighter Group attacked a marshalling yard at or near St. Valentin on this date. I will have to go through some files to see exactly what was reported and will get back to you.

Re: Train Strafing 4.May 1945 Haag-St.Valentin/Austria
Here are the operations by the 405th on this date; I included only rail targets, the squadron and times up/down and any spelling errors are due to trying to decipher cursive writing on the mission reports. I included the coordinates where given if that will help. Claims are listed as destroyed-damaged (example 1-2 railcars is 1 destroyed, 2 damaged). Also shortened locomotive to loco to save space.
511 Fighter Squadron 0610-0917 attacked a forty car train including 20 carrying motor transports at W1264 Haag; claimed 1-0 loco, 19-3 railcars and 16-0 motor transports on the flat cars. Also claimed 1-0 loco and 18-10 boxcars at W1462 St. Ritis (?) 509 FS 0710-0938 claimed 0-1 loco and 0-2 railcars of a 10 car train at Q9909 511 FS 0906-1140 at Q6590 Herman (?) claimed 0-16 box cars by strafing and at L7005 Oslow (?) dropped four bombs on a marshalling yard containing 25 railcars without observed results. 510 FS 0804-1051 strafed 20 car train 180815 Buchberg starting 3 large fires, hit marshalling yard W-010927 Turnburg (?) claiming 3-0 locos, claimed 1-0 loco and 5-0 motor transports on flat cars at W045860 Zirhing (?) and claimed 1-0 loco, 10-4 railcars and 10-0 motor transports on flat cars from a 25 car train at W030995 Wagersdorf (?). 510 FS 1105-1414 claimed 6-0 oil cars and 5-5 gravel cars and at W-0296 Friensdorf claimed 0-30 railcars. 511 FS 1210-1511 hit marshalling yard at St. Valentin W0575 which had 150 railcars; claimed 2-4 box cars. Re: Train Strafing 4.May 1945 Haag-St.Valentin/Austria
These coordinates seem to all be in the Nord de Guerre Zone, with prefix xW.
The system is explained here: http://www.echodelta.net/mbs/eng-welcome.php As an example, the co-ordinate given 180815 "Buchberg" turns out to be xW180815 for Puchberg. Latitude : 48° 13' 03'' N, Longitude : 14° 43' 18'' E https://www.google.com/maps/place/48...5!4d14.7216667 The location is on the railroad line just south of Puchberg.
