Lt. Wayne L. Mueller - O-409516 - date of death

I refer to https://pacificwrecks.com/aircraft/l-5/mueller.html in which the death is described of Lt. Wayne L. Mueller and Capt. Henry L. Leonhardt in a L-5 crash on New Guinea.

Both their 'military' gravestones (Mueller at Fort Sam Houston, TX and Leonhardt at Fort Snelling, MN) indeed have 17 Dec 1943 as date of death.

However, a (private?) memorial for Wayne L. Mueller gives 16 December 1942 as date of death.... See https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/...ngston-mueller

Although 1943 is correct (Mueller is very well active in newspaper reports during that year), I wonder how 16 Dec 1942 somehow made its way to the (family?) memorial.
